    A good old Southern boy who became one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers, Bobby Allison’s life of tragedy and triumph was once perfectly described by broadcaster Mike Joy as one of tremendous courage, incredible perseverance, and unwavering faith. Allison died Saturday. He was 86. “With deep sadness, the family of Bobby Allison announces his passing at the age of 86,” an Allison family statement said. “He passed away peacefully at home on November 9, 2024, surrounded by family.

    One of the toughest, fastest, most determined and versatile drivers to ever grace motorsport has left us, aged 90. Rufus Parnell Jones, born in Texarkana, Ark., in 1933, died of natural causes on June 4, in Torrance, Calif., the city where he had lived since he was seven years old. How significant a figure was the man we knew as Parnelli Jones? The late, great Robin Miller said it best: U.S. motorsport’s Mount Rushmore would feature A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney and Parnelli.

    The list of drivers who looked exceptional in junior formulas and then wavered when they reached the top is a long one. Some get there and swiftly plateau, because they’re used to relying purely on driving talent and lack the industriousness for self-improvement. Others stay too long in backmarker or mid-grid teams and grow stale, so that when they get their big break in a frontrunning team, they’re unable to maximize their improved circumstances.

The April/May issue of Vintage Motorsport takes advantage of hindsight to tell stories of prompt breakthroughs and also ones that seemingly took forever. Fans with foresight perhaps guessed that Renault’s win at Dijon in 1979 would lead to all Formula 1 teams switching to turbocharged engines. Within two years, Renault was a title contender.
