Washington State Magazine showcases the achievements and stories of Washington State University, its alumni, and the wider community of Washington State. It links readers to groundbreaking research, intriguing individuals, and engaging subjects, not only from WSU but from across the entire state. The magazine is published four times a year—February/Spring, May/Summer, August/Fall, and November/Winter—by the Washington State University Board of Regents. The issues released in February, August, and November are distributed to all WSU alumni, faculty, staff, and certain donors. Meanwhile, the May edition is reserved for WSU Alumni Association members, faculty, and paid subscribers.

    Our lives had to turn on a dime five years ago as a pandemic swept over the world. Washington State University shifted as well, both on campuses and in communities as we assisted with testing, vaccinating, and even delivering broadband Internet for rural students.

    No question, the COVID-19 pandemic was a challenge for higher education. The way we conduct research and the way we educate students changed almost overnight. I’d like to say it was a once-in-a-lifetime event, but that’s probably not the case. With that in mind, it can help to reflect on what worked and what could be improved. First, we were fortunate to have the Washington State University Global Campus, with its long experience delivering distance learning, help us transition to online education.

    Two Cougs, playing catchJohn Scukanec (’96 Crim. Jus.) makes a point to play a game of catch every day (Winter 2023). He saw the Fall 2024 story about Ed Niehl (’51 Phys. Ed., ’54 Ed.), a former WSU football player who recently turned 100. Scukanec, also a former Cougar football player, wanted to play catch with Niehl and said so on social media. So magazine associate editor Adriana Janovich helped connect them. And the rest is history.
