By no means is Baxter State Park a hidden gem; it's a well-known landmark in Maine. However, it's fair to say that it often takes a backseat to its cousin, Acadia National Park. Not that there's anything wrong with that, Acadia is one of the premier national parks in the United States. That said, I would argue that Baxter State Park is one of the finest parks in America. It's home to Mount Katahdin and marks the northern terminus of the legendary Appalachian Trail.

I believe it was the summer of 1994 when I made my first trip to Baxter State Park. Our group planned to hike into Chimney Pond, camp there, and then summit Katahdin. I was 14 at the time and had never been to the park—I was in for an experience I’d never forget. Chimney Pond and its campground are truly special. To begin with, there’s a beautiful 3.3-mile hike just to reach the campground. It’s a wonderful warm-up for a Katahdin summit.
