Folks, there's a serious epidemic happening across this great state of ours, and it needs to be eradicated as soon as possible. If not, our very livelihoods could be at stake. That might be a slight exaggeration—but it's really, really bad, okay? Let me set up the situation. Recently, I attended a Portland Hearts of Pine game at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. I, like many season ticket holders, have a parking pass for a nearby lot on the campus of the University of Southern Maine.

One of my favorite things to do is take day trips around the state to try out new restaurants. My wife and I love hitting the road for hours, chasing down spots we’ve seen in reviews, articles, tips, or random social media posts, whatever grabs our interest. It’s fun, adventurous, and always satisfies the palate. While traveling through Maine, we’ve discovered amazing diners, great pubs, outstanding sandwich shops, charming cafes, delicious pizza parlors, and perfectly brewed coffee.

We are officially in summer mode here in Maine. While the weather is a little slow to catch up, we Mainers aren’t about to wait to start enjoying everything the season has to offer. I'm always amazed when people actually leave Maine during the summer. Isn’t this the time we’re always waiting for? It’s a three-month stretch (if we’re lucky) of perfect decent weather, warm lakes, cold cocktails, and plenty of patio time. Why on Earth would anyone leave? It’s a short season, but it’s sweet.

’Tis the season to enjoy Maine’s great outdoors. As the days grow longer and the air warms, it’s finally time to start planning those trips to the beach, mountains, rivers, trails, and lakes. Fortunately for us Mainers, there’s no shortage of them. As you begin to map out your adventures, there’s one lake that definitely deserves your attention—especially since it was just included on a list of the best in the country.

It’s always surreal to look at a map of Maine. It’s astonishing to see how much of the state remains incredibly remote. I’ve lived in the Portland suburbs my entire life and have watched the area continually expand. It’s no bustling metropolis, but it sure isn’t rural either. Sure, there are pockets of farmland and undeveloped land, but there’s also new construction as far as the eye can see.
