A talented athlete who captained his school football, rugby and cricket teams, Ashby began playing for Liverpool City in the mid-1950’s before signing for Wigan in March 1964. Less than 12-months after joining the Club, Ashby experienced one of his sporting highlights on the biggest stage. Having beaten Barrow, St Helens, Workington and Swinton to reach the Final, Wigan then met a Hunslet side who had finished 14th in the league.
