WJIM-AM (Lansing, MI)

WJIM (1240 AM) is a radio station based in Lansing, Michigan, that features a news-talk format. The station first went on air in 1934 at 1210 kHz, operating with 250 watts during the day and 100 watts at night. It was launched by Harold Gross and his company, Gross Telecasting. According to local stories, Gross acquired the license—Lansing's oldest continuously operating commercial license—through a card game. He named the station after his son, Jim, who served as the general manager from the 1960s until the station was sold to Liggett Communications in 1985. WJIM is notable for being Lansing's second radio station, following the closure of WREO in 1927. In 1941, the station transitioned to 1240 kHz with a power of 250 watts, in compliance with the North American Radio Broadcasting Agreement. Today, WJIM is owned by Townsquare Media and acts as the flagship station for the Michigan Talk Network.

Maybe you saw it, too. Seeing a man with a chainsaw carving a bear at the Ingham County Fair is not abnormal. Seeing the same thing on a plot of grass at the corner of Jolly and Aurelius in Lansing, Michigan, on an overcast 53-degree day in May = Huh? As you can see, that's exactly what I saw:I had questions, so I pulled over and approached the man holding a chainsaw slowly, hoping I could outrun him if I startled him.

Over the holidays, I found myself down a strange rabbit hole: looking for old websites that are still up and running. When I say old websites, I mean websites that are still in their original states from when they were created on the early Internet around the turn of the century. For example, the original website to promote the Space Jam movie starring Michael Jordan was created in 1996 and is still around and (mostly) functional. It screams 1990s internet and I am a huge fan.

The 2025 list of annoying words that should be banned from Michiganders' vocabulary has been released and it's cringe. When I think of words and phrases that need to be put in a microwave until they explode, they usually fall under three categories. 1. This year's big teen slang. For example: Remember a few years ago when people said "On fleek?"  Don't get me started on the term "Cap."2. A word or phrase that has been overused by the media like National News outlets.

Crossing Michigan's Mackinac Bridge any time of the year can be nerve-wracking, especially if you're driving in the grated lane (if you know, you know). However, making the journey across the Mighty Mac during the winter or early spring presents a unique danger beyond white-out and/or windy conditions that shut down the crossing from time to time—huge, heavy chunks of ice that are the size of a truck falling from its towers.
