Yesterday a writer I know emailed me telling me that various Canadian news outlets were interviewing Canadian writers for their commentary on Alice Munro’s daughter’s recent article in the Toronto Star which details how Munro chose to stay with the man who sexually abused her daughter (and who was an active sexual predator).

Not because I’m a Christian, but because I am one generation removed from Irish diasporaCatholicism on both sides of my family. And I still fuck with Mary. She’s kind of a badass. But beyond her anarcha-communist leanings, I love her many faces, and see clearly the pre-Christian Irish Pagan impulse to Goddess worship shining through her.

There’s dishes to be washed. Laundry on the floor. I haven’t been going to the gym. There’s work stuff I’m procrastinating on. I feel like there’s a lot to do and not a lot of will to do it with. Underground, things are happening. I have to pay attention to the thoughts behind the thoughts, the flickers of images and sensations that rise and reveal themselves between the muddle of what I consider to be my “real” life and my “real” priorities.

As I’ve written before, “social justice” culture does not have a singular, unified understanding of gender. There are multiple frameworks battling it out and sometimes coexisting in an uneasy tension. One of these worldviews argues that gender identity is an entirely internal experience, and that it is impossible to know someone’s gender by looking at them.
