Yesterday a writer I know emailed me telling me that various Canadian news outlets were interviewing Canadian writers for their commentary on Alice Munro’s daughter’s recent article in the Toronto Star which details how Munro chose to stay with the man who sexually abused her daughter (and who was an active sexual predator).
Language and rhetoric are not weapons of mass destruction. Weapons of mass destruction are weapons of mass destruction (and to be clear, Israel has these - Palestinians and campus protestors do not).

There’s dishes to be washed. Laundry on the floor. I haven’t been going to the gym. There’s work stuff I’m procrastinating on. I feel like there’s a lot to do and not a lot of will to do it with. My tits are like a 34G or something like that. I don’t know anymore because I don’t wear a bra, but I remember them being a G. I used to try to squeeze myself into DDD bras, the largest you can get in “straight” sizes, before realizing I had to pay for the expensive speciality bras for gigantic boobs. Then, around 5 years ago I stopped wearing bras altogether.

Instagram made my mind into a pinball machine. The frenetic bursts of attention, anchored to nothing, and going nowhere. When I was deep in the scroll, I was in a haze, a blur. I would come out of the scroll like coming out of a bender — hazy about what had happened over the last chunk of time. I learned about the world through Instagram: information came to me decontexualized and random, free from fact checks and organized through the attention-hungry whims of the Algorithm.
