WUGA-FM (Athens, GA)
WUGA (91.7 MHz) is a public FM radio station that caters to Athens and much of northeast Georgia. It is part of the Georgia Public Broadcasting radio network but is operated by the University of Georgia. The station's studios and offices are located at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education on the UGA campus, while its transmitter is situated off Walter Sams Road in Winterville, which is southeast of Athens. The programming on WUGA includes news and public affairs, along with a variety of music genres such as classical, jazz, and folk, sourced from GPB Radio, in addition to content produced locally. On March 1, 2010, the University of Georgia announced potential budget cuts that could have led to the discontinuation of locally produced shows, turning the station into a full-time relay of the GPB network. Nevertheless, as of January 20, 2011, WUGA continues to be operated by UGA, and during the early 2010s, it merged its operations with WUGA-TV, a television station that was owned by UGA at that time.
