Yolo Journal

I've always valued insights from well-traveled individuals with a keen sense of style, rather than just writers. Often, my travel plans have sparked from simply seeing a stunning photo of a destination. This inspired me to create Yolo Journal, a project rooted in my love for photography, exploration, and gathering unique ideas. I'm thrilled to provide a space where photographers can showcase their work that might otherwise remain hidden, along with a treasure trove of travel inspiration from creative minds we admire. As someone who cherishes the feel of a printed magazine, I believe that in a world bombarded with images and information, having a magazine that resonates with you—free from distracting advertisements—is something everyone craves. Despite my background in travel content, friends often seek my personal recommendations. They want insights that feel genuine and relatable, rather than overwhelming city guides driven by search algorithms that ignore how people truly navigate new places. We all desire that one intriguing idea or tip that leads us to an experience, rather than spending hours sifting through Instagram tags to discover where the locals hang out. (Pro tip: if you're in a city with one of our stockists, make sure to stop by and ask them for insider tips on what to do and where to go!) Our goal isn't to cover every detail—after all, your smartphone is always within reach. Instead, we curate and refine the best sources and their insights, sharing them in our quarterly publication. We also keep the dialogue alive daily on @yolojournal. And when you stumble upon a place you adore, don’t hesitate to DM us and share your discovery!

A couple of years back, I was lucky enough to stay at Euphoria Retreat in Mystras, in Greece’s central Peloponnese. While the spa has all of the requisite treatments, hammams and plunge pools, I loved how tied to the outdoors and history it felt—we took long hikes through the pine-scented mountains overlooking nearby Sparta, occasionally passing tiny abandoned but elaborately painted Byzantine chapels and spigots of icy mountain water.

I’m a crossbody person 99% of the time. Occasionally, I will use a proper purse if I’m going to a meeting or an event and the occasion calls for it. I typically use a Métier bag when I’m going out for the day (or night), but when I walk the dog, I don’t need that much of a bag.

Some gifts are immediate, like the plump pair of lamb chops the rotund and comically lupine chef James Beard once insisted on buying me after we’d begun chatting while waiting in line at the meat counter in Greenwich Village’s long-vanished but still much regretted Jefferson Market on Sixth Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets.

In short… A luxurious 32-room, family-run boutique hotel in the heart of Venice. The surroundings… You might find it hard to leave the plush comforts of your (temporary) home at Violino d’Oro — and yet the hotel is centrally and superbly located. The main entrance is just next to the gondolas lined up on Canal San Moisè.

Pippa Small has spent the past 30 years traveling all over the world, working with artisans in areas of conflict to help generate secure livelihoods through jewelry design. On the road for half the year, she has her routine down pat—even if she’s still a self-proclaimed over-packer. No matter where work takes her, Pippa is never without her jewelry stack or signature blue wardrobe.
