York Vision, formerly referred to as yorkVision and York Student Vision, stands as one of the two student newspapers at the University of York. It holds the title of the most decorated student newspaper in the UK, having received six 'Guardian Student Newspaper of the Year' awards, with the latest one awarded during the 2014–2015 academic year.

Did Democracy Just Die in Darkness?

Following Trump’s inauguration seven years ago, The Washington Post published their first slogan “Democracy Dies in Darkness”. It seems an apt description of their decision last week. The Washington Post’s promotion during the 2019 Super Bowl featured a shot of the Statue of Liberty, lit up in the darkness, and Tom Hanks reading: “Knowing empowers us. Knowing helps us decide. Knowing keeps us free.” As many people said at the time, it was all a bit cringey and certainly heavy-handed.

One of the key battlegrounds is over what it means to be a man, particularly a young man, in America in 2024. The Republicans certainly have their answer, but it feels like the Democrats are still unsure. They are the party that champions women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and positive action, but there can be space for men too. I believe the Democratic Party must do more to advocate men’s issues as well, or risk losing this demographic to the Trump-Tate-Peterson answer to uncertain masculinity.

Last night the University of York hosted BBC Question Time’s electoral debate, welcoming the leaders of four political parties to answer questions from a live studio audience. In contrast to the packed hall of the Open and Women’s doubles on Saturday, the Mixed Doubles on Sunday morning attracted far fewer spectators. Perhaps it was the late-night announcement of Lancaster’s victory echoing across campus at the end of an action-packed day – preparing Lancaster for a wild night out of celebration but giving York less motivation for the rest of the tournament.
