Thanks to support from Youth Music’s Incubator fund, YSWN has been able to offer a series of paid traineeship roles to help women and people of minority gender aged 18–25 take a first step into the audio industry. Hosted by AiAI Studios, BeSound Studios, Rare Tone Mastering, PitStop Productions and Club Haus Studios, the placements have given the trainees valuable skills in everything from film sound design and podcast editing to vinyl mastering and games audio.

Artists’ ChildArtists’ Child is the solo electronic music project of performance designer Bethany Wells. A modular synth alchemist, she sculpts powerful narratively-driven journeys, moving between drone, ambient and techno, with a sonic palette of glitches, wild texture and driving rhythms. Drawing on her background in architecture and performance design, Artists’ Child creates immersive spatial worlds for audiences to enter.

As part of our Changing Gear programme, we’re looking for three emerging women or minority gender music creators based in Yorkshire and the Humber to compose and perform new electronic pieces inspired by the ideas and legacy of pioneering composer Daphne Oram and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of her birth. Each selected creator will receive a fee of £1,400, mentoring from past Oram Awards winners and the chance to develop their artistic voice by experimenting with analogue music kit.

Our latest Annual Review covering the financial year 2023–24 has now been published and is available to download and read online. The 12 months from April 2023 until March 2024 were packed with activities that both inspired us to develop our work and reminded us of why it’s needed. As well as continuing our successful WIRED music technology clubs, we created our own series of online video tutorials to inspire the next generation of audio professionals.

We want to include the voices of women and minority gendered people in the industry in our positive campaign to raise awareness of the gender and intersectional inequalities they face every day. The statistics on representation aren’t good – we know this. Less than 5% of the music tech industry is comprised of women, non-binary or trans people. Shockingly of these, less than 1% are from the Global Majority, Asian or ethnically diverse.
