The highly-anticipated full reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 has brought with it a myriad of emotions. While most remain very excited about the new system—which is arriving in only a matter of weeks—others have been struck with ultimate sticker shock at the surprising price tags of system’s games, in particular. Initial reactions point to “corporate greed” as the ‘obvious’ answer. But, perhaps the devil is in the details. In other words, things be expensive these days.

Saber Interactive has occupied an opulent position in the driving-sim subgenre for several years, thanks to its sterling work with MudRunner and SnowRunner. Meanwhile, the 2024 spin-off, Expeditions, continues to have a mixed reputation. Yet, that hasn’t stopped the team from forging ahead with RoadCraft—yet another heavy machinery project infused with the MudRunner DNA. Interestingly, Saber has opted to sever this entry from the Runner family name.

Not content with Yars: Recharged, Atari’s classic game has shockingly gotten another reimagining. Even more surprising, it’s a Metroid-like this time. Yars Rising is far from the most unique or original game around and, on the normal difficulty, it’s incredibly handholdy. But the lengths developer WayForward have gone through to actually make it just as much of a Yars game as a Metroid-like is pretty astounding.

A month before its seventh anniversary, Nintendo has released its quarterly financial report. The report has revealed that as of December 31, 2023, Nintendo Switch sales have hit 139.36 million units globally. While it’s clear that the console is slowing down, this achievement fundamentally brings it within arms length of not only becoming Nintendo’s best-selling console ever, but taking the top spot as the best-selling game system of all time.

There have been various reports from industry insiders about Microsoft allegedly taking a drastic new approach with its first-party Xbox games and that’s bringing them to PS5 and Switch consoles. One source for the reports is from Tom Warren at The Verge, which itself has apparently gotten word that “a new multi-platform approach for certain Xbox games is emerging inside Microsoft”.

The sunny skies of “The Sunflower State” fittingly cap off another year of growth for American Truck Simulator, and has personally provided me with 10.5 hours of exploration across nearly 1,600 virtual miles. Interestingly, going into it, I honestly didn’t know what to expect or how this new DLC would turn out given the wide-openness of the state. That said, I’ve been left rather surprised with how much the scenes of Kansas left an impression on me.

The ‘labour of love’ continues with Update 1.49 which has just been rolled out for American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2. This new update brings with it a wealth of additions and improvements, including various changes to the skyboxes and weather effects, used truck dealers, keybind modifiers, and much more. Arguably the biggest change is the addition of used truck dealers; a feature that has been requested by fans for quite some time.
