One phrase that had nearly gone out of circulation was "Unity in Diversity." Originally coined by the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, it first appeared in his book The Discovery of India. He believed that India's diversity of languages, religions, castes, and creeds could be a source of strength, not conflict. It denotes harmony and unity among different cultures and regions. Alas, since India's "real independence" in 2014, every effort is being made to obliterate the memory of Nehru.

In the case of Gautam Buddha, it was his abdication of the throne, and in the case of MK Gandhi, it was his decision to give up his upper garments to identify with the masses, beautifully captured in Richard Attenborough's Oscar-winning biopic and his eventual martyrdom. Nelson Mandela showed greatness when he appointed a Truth Commission rather than wreaking vengeance on the white rulers who jailed him for 27 years.

The term "zeal of the convert" is commonly used in popular culture, as it is believed that converts to new beliefs are likely to show more devotion than those born into the beliefs. I remember this whenever I read something about Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He was a Congressman who left the party to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. I read somewhere that what provoked him to do so was being kept waiting by Rahul Gandhi when he sought an appointment with him.

The mainstream media continues to tom-tom the "great victory" the BJP-led Mahayuti Alliance achieved in Maharashtra. Of course, they don't bother to analyse the depths of incivility to which its leaders stooped to win the election.
