The term "zeal of the convert" is commonly used in popular culture, as it is believed that converts to new beliefs are likely to show more devotion than those born into the beliefs. I remember this whenever I read something about Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
He was a Congressman who left the party to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. I read somewhere that what provoked him to do so was being kept waiting by Rahul Gandhi when he sought an appointment with him.

Pope Francis frequently addresses two pressing global issues: caring for the earth, "our common home," and fostering interfaith harmony through dialogue and cooperation. His commitment to these causes is evident through his travels, meetings with religious leaders, and joint declarations that emphasise the need for collaboration among faiths.

A middle-aged woman living in a metro city juggles her daily chores early in the morning. Unlike others in the household, who are still fast asleep, she is awake at least two hours before anyone stirs. As she starts cooking in the kitchen, she gradually wakes the children, pushes them to bathe, and readies them for school. Running from one corner of the house to another, she grabs their bags and hurries to drop them at the bus stop.

This dark time calls to mind a quote misattributed to the Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels: "When I hear the word intellectual, I reach for my gun ... We mean to take over – nicely if possible, but if that's not possible, well, civility is not the highest of virtues." Today, politics and social interaction are a call to war, and civility is an annoying impediment.

About a month ago, on 15 October, the 2024 Global Hunger Index was released. India ranks 105 out of 127 countries; with a score of 27.3, India has a level of hunger that is serious. On that day, a World Bank report stated that "almost 129 million Indians are living in extreme poverty in 2024, on less than $2.15 (about Rs 181) a day." These are hard facts by independent agencies, which the Government of India cannot find fault with.

Just before the US Presidential election results, Yogendra Yadav preached that a voyeuristic partisanship, either pro-Trump or pro-Harris, was undignified and demeaned us. But as an ordinary, politically concerned citizen of the world, I, like myriads of other undignified beings, am emotionally invested in what's happening in the most powerful nation in the world. My partisan heart grieves for the victims in Palestine and is outraged by America's complicity in the ongoing genocide there.

In Christian belief, humankind's fall from grace first happened when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, precipitating a descent from divine favour to a state of sin and loss of power. In the world we know, the story of humankind has been one about heroes vanquishing villains and the villains periodically turning the tables, much more frequently in recent times.
