Britain’s largest listed defence contractor has signed contracts worth $2.5 billion with Sweden and Denmark as European nations strengthen military spending amid mounting geopolitical tensions. BAE Systems will provide 115 new CV90 armoured combat vehicles to Denmark, and another 50 to Sweden. The agreement, which covers spares, support, logistics and training, also includes an undisclosed number of vehicles financed by the two governments to support Ukraine’s forces.

The hotel group behind Claridge’s is planning to nearly triple its portfolio over the next decade, expanding into Paris, New York, Miami and Dubai as it capitalises on surging demand for luxury travel. Maybourne Hotel Group, which currently operates six properties — four in London, one in Beverly Hills in Los Angeles and another on the French Riviera — aims to increase its portfolio to 15 to 17 hotels by 2035.

On the Beach, the online holiday booking platform, has reinstated its dividend and announced a £25 million share buyback programme after another record year. The car dealership group Caffyns has reported a sharp rise in profits, thanks in part to an unusual £140,000 windfall from the sale of a single personalised number plate. The proceeds from the auction helped to lift pre-tax profits to £213,000 for the six months to September 30, compared with £44,000 a year earlier. The company’s underlying pre-tax profit, which excludes items unrelated to the primary motor trade business, rose from £259,000 to £452,000.

Shares in the London-listed waste management company Renewi soared by almost 50 per cent following an announcement that Macquarie, the Australian asset manager, has launched a £700 million takeover tilt. The proposed cash offer of 870p per share represents a 57 per cent premium to Renewi’s closing price of 554p on Wednesday and comes just over a year after a previous bid by Macquarie at 810p was rebuffed for “fundamentally’ undervaluing the company.

Six in ten British shoppers say they would stop shopping with a retailer if charged a fee to return an online purchase, according to research from Virgin Media O2 Business. As more major retailers introduce return fees to offset growing operational costs, 47 per cent of shoppers report they have already been charged for returning items, with one in five paying £5 or more.
