DETROIT — In the front seat of a trailer-less semi, Nubian goats peek their heads out of the half-opened window, seemingly asking to be let out, held, or heard by their owner. A few minutes later, around 11 a.m. Sept. 17, Keion Jackson answers their bleating prayers, ushering them out one by one to the parking lot pavement. Once there, he places a bowl of grain near the goats, a snack before their main course — Belle Isle Park’s invasive plants.

Aaron Boak, Michigan Farm Bureau I was raised in the small town of Fowler, not Fowlerville, which I have to tell people all the time. There’s one flashing light, a population of just over 1,200, including the 54 I graduated from high school with in 1999. Now I live in Howell (Livingston County), which is really just a giant Fowler, surrounded by corn and soybeans.
