Sahan Journal became roommates with local mainstay St. Paul Neighborhood News earlier this year, and their large studio space has provided some unique opportunities for photography. Haitian dancer and instructor Djenane Saint Juste graciously agreed to carve out part of a Sunday afternoon this summer to stop by the studio and collaborate. Djenane’s dance skills and enthusiasm, combined with a bit of flash and in-camera trickery, added up to some of the most fun and unique photos of the whole year.

A fire destroyed several yurts Thursday at the Camp Nenookaasi homeless encampment in south Minneapolis. The official city of Minneapolis account on X, formerly known as Twitter, confirmed the fire in a 12:43 p.m. post, and later noted that two people were treated on site for non-life threatening injuries. A Sahan Journal photographer at the scene reported shortly after 1 p.m. that the fire appeared to have been extinguished, and that only one yurt appeared to be partially standing.

They began with a demo shed in September 2022, placed on a field where the tribe holds powwows, an annual celebration of music and dance. The kids used it as a concession stand to sell sodas and candies. The remaining skeptics all wanted their pictures taken next to it. "Once they saw it, they changed their minds," Desjarlais said.
