Immigration officials arrested a University of Minnesota student last week because of his drunk driving arrest in 2023, federal officials said in a new court filing. Doğukan Günaydın, an international student from Turkey, was arrested on March 27 by plainclothes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers near his home in St. Paul as he was on his way to class, according to a lawsuit he filed on Sunday. He was studying for a STEM MBA at the Carlson School of Management.

Amid a climate of anti-immigration rhetoric and policies from the White House, GOP lawmakers in the Minnesota Legislature are proposing legislation that would bar undocumented residents from accessing state-funded programs like MinnesotaCare. House File 10, authored by Rep. Isaac Schultz, R-Elmdale Township, would prohibit undocumented Minnesotans from accessing any state program funded by taxpayers that require proof of residency.

A Prior Lake teacher is threatening to sue the school district that disciplined her for repeated violations of its social media policy. Brooke Zahn, who teaches fourth grade at Jeffers Pond Elementary school, admitted that she used her personal Facebook account to share an image of a cartoon family and the words, “A FAMILY THAT IS DEPORTED TOGETHER STAYS TOGETHER,” in a Facebook group last December.

Some residents of a St. Paul homeless encampment scheduled for eviction today plan to relocate to a nearby park, while others don’t know where they’ll go, said advocates working with the camp. The city plans to stay on site for “as long as needed” to clear the encampment located on the city’s East Side south of Payne Avenue and 7th Street East, said Casey Rodriguez, communications manager for the city of St. Paul’s Department of Safety & Inspections.

Xianna Mouayang and Yeng Moua had one rule for their wedding – no alcohol. Celebrating with alcohol is an integral part of traditional Hmong weddings. Family members pressured them to include alcohol, but they refused to oblige. As a result, Mouayang said, her extended relatives decided not to attend. The couple first met while they were in the early stages of substance abuse recovery, and their rule was designed to keep them on their recovery journey.

St. Paul plans to evict a homeless encampment next week near the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary that is home to many Hmong residents. About 40 occupants were at the site as of Wednesday morning; roughly half identify as Hmong or Southeast Asian, according to the city. Kabo Yang, a volunteer who regularly visits the camp, said the number of occupants is likely much higher.

When Zenebech Aly first immigrated to Rochester, Minnesota, in 2010, she couldn’t sit still as she waited for authorization to work legally in the country. She was constantly busy where she last lived, the United Arab Emirates, working for a construction company after she left her home country of Ethiopia. “I love to work, and work is a sense of security for me,” said Aly.

During the first few months of this year, I grew accustomed to seeing puffs of gray smoke from wood fires in the shivering cold. Each time Minneapolis officials removed Camp Nenookaasi, a south Minneapolis homeless encampment, I followed where the homeless encampment went and how it evolved. But that’s not all that stands out to me about housing stories this year. There was the anti-Muslim email that prompted the Lino Lakes city council to censure one of its members.
