At a news conference Wednesday, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described some of Tuesday’s operational tactics by federal agencies as “tone deaf” and said he’s communicated his concerns to those agencies.

Immigration officials arrested a University of Minnesota student last week because of his drunk driving arrest in 2023, federal officials said in a new court filing. Doğukan Günaydın, an international student from Turkey, was arrested on March 27 by plainclothes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers near his home in St. Paul as he was on his way to class, according to a lawsuit he filed on Sunday. He was studying for a STEM MBA at the Carlson School of Management.

Amid a climate of anti-immigration rhetoric and policies from the White House, GOP lawmakers in the Minnesota Legislature are proposing legislation that would bar undocumented residents from accessing state-funded programs like MinnesotaCare. House File 10, authored by Rep. Isaac Schultz, R-Elmdale Township, would prohibit undocumented Minnesotans from accessing any state program funded by taxpayers that require proof of residency.
