AUSTIN, Texas - Sheriffs in some of the largest Texas counties will be required to enlist some of their deputies as federal immigration agents under a bill passed by the Senate Tuesday afternoon. Senate Bill 8, filed by Sen. Charles Schwertner, R-Georgetown, was approved by the Republican-controlled Senate on a party-line 20-11 vote. The measure will now head to the Texas House before it can reach Gov. Greg Abbott's desk. Copyright 2025 Tribune Content Agency.
