COLUMBUS, Ohio — It happens every summer, and this weekend we are talking about wildfire smoke leading to hazy skies here across the Midwest. So what's going on? Several large fires are currently burning across parts of Canada in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and these fires have been burning for several days, sending large plumes of smoke up into the atmosphere. All of that smoke is getting picked up by upper-level winds, which are transporting the smoke south into the Midwest.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Memorial Day in Columbus has featured a variety of weather conditions through the years — from hot to chilly to rainy. Weather data for Columbus goes back to 1879. Typically on Memorial Day, high temperatures have been in the 70s/80s and low temperatures in the 50s/60s. It is also not uncommon for Columbus to see some rain on Memorial Day. Memorial Day was originally observed each year on May 30th, until federal law moved the holiday to the last Monday of May beginning in 1971.
