COLUMBUS, Ohio — Avery Russell, 12, is soft spoken but does not mince her words. “I truly thought I was going to die,” Russell told a group of Ohio lawmakers at the House Public Safety Committee meeting during a second hearing for House Bill 247, known as Avery’s Law. She was referring to a playdate gone wrong last June, when she was viciously attacked by a pair of pit bulls who tore off her ears, and left intense physical and emotional scars. The attack left her in a coma.

Her husband, Lancaster Police Patrolman Marvin “Steve” Moyer, died from a blood disease he contracted while trying to arrest a suspect. On Tuesday, she was at the visitation of Morrow County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel Weston Sherrer, who was shot and killed on May 26. For Moyer, the memory of her husband’s passing remains vivid.

On Tuesday morning, hospitals, law enforcement, EMS and fire crews met to discuss plans for Red, White & BOOM! "To talk about what a response would look like if something happened at Red, White & BOOM! How could we manage patients in a mass casualty event if something happened during Boom?" said Jodi Keller, director of Healthcare Emergency Preparedness for COTS.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The city of Columbus has invested $28 million in summer programming. Mayor Andrew Ginther said this is the most money the city has invested in the programming. He said that is because the city knows that summer programs for kids work. The programs not only give kids somewhere to go and something to do in the summer, but they also are aimed at preventing future crime in the city. There are more than 100 different organizations' programs funded this summer by the city.
