Aasmah Mir appeared on Celebrity MasterChef in 2017 In 2017, my daughter was 18 months old, hardly sleeping and I was only working two short days a week. Yes, it was on a job I loved – Radio 4 – and I was ridiculously lucky to have become a mother at the age of 43, but I was going crazy. So when my agent suggested Celebrity MasterChef, I jumped at the chance. But on the first day on set, I had a nasty shock. I had no idea until this week that just 5 per cent of women in their early forties get pregnant from IVF. I learnt this in an interview with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority on Times Radio. You must belt out Flower of Scotland while getting tonked 5-1 by Germany.

I have written before about the full blood transfusion I had to have when I was born in Glasgow in 1971. My mum had to remind me when I was writing my memoir. Even after writing about it here, I failed to make the connection between the infected blood inquiry, which began in 2018, and my own blood transfusion. More than 30,000 people in the UK were infected with HIV and hepatitis C after being given contaminated blood products.
