In the early hours of Sunday morning after leaving The Hill, a University of Kentucky student was walking behind the S. Limestone Chipotle to head home when five men jumped him, according to a police report. This assault happened right off campus just a day after UK increased safety measures and police patrol due to previous student safety concerns.

Gunfire erupted on Sunday near Raising Cane’s, prompting UK campus alerts and sending students fleeing. Shots were fired around 1 a.m. on Nov. 3 on the corner of Winslow and S. Upper Street. UK sent out alerts to inform students of the shooting, but the location details were left out of the first alert sent. The alert read, “URGENT: Shots fired in [location] AVOID THE AREA.”Six minutes later, an alert was sent clarifying the location of the previous alert.

Former President Donald Trump and acting Vice President Kamala Harris participated in their first debate of the year tackling topics that voters have been seeking answers for. On Sept. 10, the two shook hands on stage at 9 p.m. with moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis who began the debate with the topic of the economy. Per a coin toss, Trump chose to have the final word, which left Harris to take the microphone first.

While it’s my senior year, this is just the beginning for thousands of University of Kentucky students. There are a handful of “lasts” we’ll experience this year, but there are also many new experiences around the corner for us. Most of the student body will be voting in their first presidential election. We have a new men’s basketball coach for this upcoming season. The largest classroom building at UK is under construction and no longer hosting classes.

Pro-Palestine protestors gathered on Wednesday evening at a solidarity rally for Gaza outside the William T. Young Library at the University of Kentucky. The crowd of over 300 people included students, alumni and community members. According to Aljazeera, the retaliation efforts from Israel following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack has resulted in the loss of over 35,000 Palestinian lives. The crowd was protesting these acts of violence.
