When Paxton High School sophomore Landon Drews saw unused school land, he saw an opportunity. Inspired by his brother and experiences with dryland farming (growing crops in areas with limited water), Drews turned the space into a corn test plot, blending education, agriculture and leadership into a successful Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project. “I’ve been around dryland farming my whole life, and this project let me learn more about the challenges farmers face,” says Drews.

For entrepreneur Alyssa Walsh, FFA wasn’t just an organization — it was the spark that ignited her passion for agriculture and set her on the path to launching two successful businesses. “FFA truly was transformative — not just because of the material I was learning, but, perhaps more importantly, because of the teachers who guided me and the community members who supported the program,” Walsh says. Growing up in Muscatine, Iowa, Walsh was a generation removed from farming.

Trey Voeller’s journey from a high school FFA member to becoming one of 10 interns at the prestigious World Food Prize Foundation highlights his dedication to agricultural education and food science. Voeller’s introduction to agriculture began at Prairie City-Monroe High School in Monroe, Iowa. As a sophomore, he wrote a research paper about the World Food Prize’s global challenge research program, focusing on the Republic of Niger.
