The Sentencing Guidelines (Pre-sentence Reporters) Bill has received its second reading in the House of Lords. The Government has been accused of “running scared of rather nasty right-wingers” over plans to block new sentencing guidelines. New guidance from the independent Sentencing Council would have recommended a pre-sentence report (PSR) be sought before sentencing offenders from ethnic, cultural or faith minorities.

(Alliance News) - The chief executive of retail firm Next PLC has warned that the UK government's crackdown on zero-hours contracts could prove to be a "wrecking ball for the part-time economy". Simon Wolfson, who has headed the clothing company for 24 years, said Next does not use zero-hours contracts, but does employ 25,000 part-time employees.
