I’ve spent much of my career managing large refactoring and rebuilding efforts. At Google, I pushed the AdSense team to completely rewrite our home-grown CRM system. It was a disastrous mistake. At PagerDuty, I led the effort to overhaul our notifications platform. It pains me to admit how over budget and behind schedule the project was, but I’d make the same decision in a heartbeat even if the true cost had been better understood upfront.
