    Local community college students at Allan Hancock College and Cuesta College will soon be able to earn Cal Poly bachelor’s degrees without leaving their campuses. This fall, 20 students at Allan Hancock College became the first cohort to start working towards their bachelor’s degrees in sociology through the Cal Poly’s new 2+2 Program. 2+2 allows qualified students at Allan Hancock College studying sociology to complete their final two years of undergrad on the Santa Maria campus.

    Cal Maritime will integrate into Cal Poly, in hopes of saving Maritime from its growing financial troubles. The California State University Board of Trustees unanimously approved the merger of Cal Maritime and Cal Poly Thursday morning, according to a Cal State press release. The two universities will be administratively integrated by July 2025. The Cal State system approved $35 million to integrate the two campuses over the next seven years.

    College of Engineering Dean Amy Fleischer is leaving Cal Poly in January 2025, according to a university-wide email sent Tuesday morning. Since taking the position in 2018, Fleischer developed several new programs and boosted DEI initiatives in the college. Through her tenure, Fleischer hired over 60 faculty members and implemented several mentorship and career-development programs for early-career faculty, according to the announcement.

    The San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) is enacting their annual Safety Enhancement Zone (SEZ) tonight, doubling party-related fines for the next two weekends. The first period extends from Thursday, Oct. 24 at midnight to Monday, Oct. 28 at 7 a.m., with next weekend following the same restrictions, according to San Luis Obispo Municipal Code 9.22.040. For students, this means several violations will result in hefty fines, ranging from $700 to $1,000.
