Pune: State health minister Prakash Abitkar on Monday said a 41-year-old resident of Dhayari, who died in Solapur on Jan 25, had developed Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). "It's a confirmed GBS case," he said. The chartered accountant's death makes him the first casualty in the Pune GBS cluster that began to form on Jan 9. The minister's statement came a day after a daily health department bulletin on GBS had listed the death as "suspected". Since Jan 9, Pune has had 111 GBS cases.

Kolhapur: The Solapur district administration has sought Rs 2 crore from state govt to develop an AI-based system to manage the crowd at Pandharpur's Vitthal Rukhmini Mandir on Ashadi Ekadashi, when about 20 lakh devotees throng the temple every year. The administration plans to use data gathered from AI-featured cameras and real-time satellite imagery to analyse and regulate crowd movement at the temple. Officials said the system would be one of its kind to be developed at any pilgrimage site.

Kolhapur: A tiger, which has travelled around 500km from the Tipeshwar wildlife sanctuary in Yavatmal to the Solapur-Dharashiv border, has attacked and killed 13 animals over the past two weeks. A week ago, an order was issued by the forest department to capture the tiger and release it in the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) in the Satara-Sangli district. Accordingly, a team of 10 rescuers from Chandrapur's Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) came, but it returned without catching the tiger.

Kolhapur/Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde's visit to his village in Satara on Sunday fuelled speculation that he was upset with the district guardian minister appointment as two of his party colleagues did not get the posts. Though Shinde said the issue would be resolved, NCP's Hasan Mushrif and BJP's Pankaja Munde also spoke out against the appointments.
