The Richard E. Rauh Studio Theatre swelled with laughter last Friday as it hosted the Pitt Stages production of “That’s Not How I Remember It.” The one-act play, which ran from March 1 to March 3, was written by playwright, novelist and educator Don Zolidis and directed by junior social work major and theater arts minor Ty’Mariya Moss. The play follows a mom and dad recounting radically different versions of the story of how they met in 1986 to their child.

Senior forward Blake Hinson made history in Pitt men’s basketball’s 88-73 victory over Florida State. The senior forward finished with six three-pointers, putting him at 104 on the season and breaking Pitt’s single-season three-point record previously held by Ashton Gibbs. The win marks the Panthers’ 20th of the season. Pitt head coach Jeff Capel made sure to give Hinson his praise after the Panthers earned their 11th ACC victory of the season. “Shout out to Blake,” Capel said.

Two weeks ago, eager for my spring break trip to Tampa, I ordered an abundance of bathing suits and summery clothes. Now, as I return home from class to packages stacked high on my porch, I’m forced to deal with the consequences of my impulse decision — a decision I made before I considered the damage to my bank account or the minimal room in my bag.

So, I played “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” last weekend. I was hoping for a break from my piles of real-life responsibilities. I was curled up in bed, fairy lights twinkling and pumpkin-donut candle burning. For all intents and purposes, my setup was as cozy as cozy can be. I booted up a new save, excitedly created a new island and got bored enough to put down the game within fifteen minutes.

The past few months have been really difficult for me in terms of my relationship with writing. I had moments when I reverted to unhealthy coping skills. I struggled with control when I felt a spiral coming. I did not practice meditation, positive thinking or other tactics to manage anxiety and depression. The winter months are difficult for me because I have seasonal affective disorder. Depressive episodes are more frequent and I tend to hibernate to cope.

As early as middle school, there was a guy that was known as “the guy who dates Asians.” It also happened to be only the adopted Asians. In high school, I dated a guy who, after I dated him, was also labeled as having a type for Asians. His current girlfriend is also Asian. In college, for a short amount of time I dated a guy who told me that his best friend thinks I look like his ex-girlfriend from high school who was also Chinese and adopted. I know a girl who does the same with Asian guys.

My “Gotcha Day” was last week. A “Gotcha Day” is the day that your adoptive parents brought you back from the orphanage. For many adoptees, this day is important. For me, I never remember the date. My parents always text “Happy Gotcha Day,” and sometimes it makes me feel weird. During my younger years, I viewed it as an extension of my birthday celebration, but now, having an awareness of what adoption means to me, I get a bit down. My birthday is the same.

With Valentine’s Day the other week, I decided to write on a topic that is not only relevant to those who are adopted — loneliness. One of my close friends who is also adopted made an insightful point in response to my first blog that being adopted can be really lonely. Regardless of whether you are seeing someone or have a long-term partner, it can still feel lonely.

Last spring I tried to start a new club at Pitt called “Three Points 1 Heart.” Our mission was to create a safe space for adoptees to come together, share stories and provide resources. While the club didn’t really get off the ground, I still have the same motivation — to share my story and what I’ve learned as a Chinese adoptee. I hope people, regardless of being adopted or not, can take away something from what I have to share. While I am adopted, I cannot speak for all adoptees.
