COLLINS, Miss. (WDAM) - A logging incident knocked out power to parts of South Collins on Friday morning. According to Covington County Emergency Management Director Brennon Chancellor, a logging company working with the city was clearing an area at the fire department training site when a tree fell on a power line. Mississippi Power is on the way as of 9:30 a.m. to restore power. Terminals where truckers fill up their tankers with gas are also without power at this time.

JACKSON, Miss. (WDAM) - Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has partnered with the Mississippi Department of Mental Health to declare Nov. 10-16 as Mississippi Veterans' Suicide Awareness Week. The week is dedicated to recognizing and addressing mental health issues facing veterans. The week‘s observance will also take place during Veteran’s Day on Nov. 11.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg man was arrested in Memphis, Tenn. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, after an investigation by the U.S. Marshals Service. 25-year-old Kode McNair of Hattiesburg was arrested on Tuesday and charged with capital murder and tampering with/fabricating evidence. On Jan. 3, 2020, John Anthony “Jay” Tarvin was shot and killed at a home on Presley Drive in Hattiesburg. A little over two years later, on Oct. 19, 2022, a warrant was issued for McNair’s arrest in connection with the crime.

JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM/Gray News) - The driver of a pickup truck survived after their truck was crushed under a cement truck. Authorities responded to a crash on Highway 29 in Jones County, Mississippi, on Monday. When firefighters arrived, they discovered a pickup truck rear-ended a cement truck. The driver of the pickup was trapped inside and firefighters used hydraulic tools to extricate the driver.

FORREST COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) - A homicide investigation has begun in Forrest County after a man was discovered with a gunshot wound in his home. The Forrest County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene Tuesday afternoon. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a deceased 49-year-old man at a home in the Glendale community. Witnesses were able to provide information that led to the immediate identification and arrest of an unidentified suspect.

MOUNT OLIVE, Miss. (WDAM) - A Covington County School District Student was killed, and two others were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Mount Olive. On Monday, Aug. 19, at around 5:30 p.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a crash on Highway 532 in Covington County. 12-year-old Josiah Hutton and his cousin, 17-year-old Tristan T. Hutton, were in a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu traveling east when they collided with a 2003 Dodge Ram traveling west. Josiah was pronounced dead on the scene.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - New University of Southern Mississippi students gathered at the Rock to paint the Eagle Walk on Aug. 19. The long-standing tradition has been the highlight of Golden Eagle Welcome Week, affectionately known as GEWW on campus. Freshmen are invited to paint the ground of the Eagle Walk, where the football players, band, cheerleaders, dance team and Dixie Darlings march through on game days, in a bright USM gold.

JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) - A Laurel man has been arrested in connection to a stolen agriculture equipment incident in Jones County. The Mississippi Agriculture and Livestock Theft Bureau investigators identified and arrested Marc Herrington of Laurel as a suspect in the theft. Herrington has been taken to the Jones County Adult Attention Center and has been charged with four counts of grand larceny. MALTB recovered a stolen tractor, attachments and lawnmower in Jones County.
