    Like many people around the world, I rejoiced with the liberated Syrian people when the tyrannical dynasty of a father and son that oppressed them for more than half a century finally came to an end. There is no doubt that the revolutionary lightning that struck Syria and brought down the regime with speed of light would have enormous geopolitical implications and perhaps regional rippling effect. No one can deny the historic significance of December 8.

    Whilst the memorandum between Addis Ababa and Hargeisa has brought issues around Somalia’s sovereignty back into the spotlight, addressing the sovereignty-deficit is an old problem.  Somalis find themselves in a race against time as Turkiye’s abortive attempts to broker a deal between Somalia and Ethiopia stall. Meanwhile, the likelihood of Addis Ababa advancing its memorandum with Somaliland grows, posing a potential threat to the unity of the country.
