THERE’S nothing quite like a refreshing cold drink to cool you down in the summer heat. You’ll be sure to find one in two pubs in Tameside, which will be offering a range of craft ciders during a 10-day festival. The Ash Tree in Ashton-under-Lyne and The Society Rooms in Stalybridge will have traditional apple ciders, perries and flavoured ciders on tap for the festival – which begins on Friday (June 27) and runs until Sunday, July 6.

TAMESIDE residents are being encouraged to help prevent the spread of measles as the summer holidays loom large. It comes as recent data shows a rise in measles across Greater Manchester. The borough’s Public Health team are reminding families to check their MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccinations are up to date. This is particularly the case before travelling abroad, as measles outbreaks are also being seen overseas.

Court orders closure of Hyde shop over illegal tobacco

A HYDE town centre shop has been forced to close down after repeatedly selling illegal tobacco. H Local Store on Market Street had been found to be selling illicit cigarettes, hand-rolling tobacco and e-cigarettes on numerous occasions. Tameside Council says its Trading Standards team has seized 26,860 illegal cigarettes, 7.45kg of illegal hand-rolling tobacco and 284 illegal e-cigarettes from the shop since 2020.

FAMILIES are being invited to enjoy a day making memories with a wide range of fun-filled activities. The 4C Community Centre in Ashton-under-Lyne will soon be holding its annual Community Fun Day. It takes place at the centre on Taunton Road on Saturday, July 5, from 1pm to 5pm. There will be game stalls outside, free bouncy castles for the children, a DJ and performers to keep everyone entertained. TWO Tameside futsal coaches have proved they’re just as sharp on the court as they are on the touchline. Oscar Lucas and Kai Lawless both coach at Sala Futsal Club but also play for Bolton Futsal Club. The dynamic duo played a key role in helping Bolton to be crowned national champions recently. They reached the grand final of the FA National Futsal Series first tier, beating Manchester Futsal Club 2-0 at the National Cycling Centre.

Naila Missous, who teaches at Manor Green Primary Academy, saw a need to fill a gap in a subject which has no national curriculum. Naila hopes her recently-released book ‘Teaching Primary RE’ helps reduce the disparity across the country and a reliance on locally agreed syllabuses – often shaped by teachers, religious leaders and community groups.

Support needed for two new defibrillators in Stalybridge

TWO community organisations are looking to install two new defibrillators in Stalybridge town centre. Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary Club has teamed up with Stalybridge Town Team to explore where the life-saving devices could go – but the project also needs financial support. They are working with local shops and businesses to purchase the devices that deliver an electric shock to the heart, to restore a normal rhythm or restart a stopped heart.
