The Bears, who won 5A-6A last year, are ranked No. 6 nationally.

For the Grizzlies (19-2), it was their first state championship for a program that began in 2008.

    For the Milton girls lacrosse team, winning championships is only part of the gig. When the top-ranked Eagles (19-2) play No. 3 Creekview (15-7) on Saturday in the Division II final, they can win their seventh consecutive state title and 18th in the 20 years since the GHSA began recognizing lacrosse as a championship sport in 2005.

    Hughes senior track star Maurice “Lae” (pronounced “Lay”) Gleaton already ranks among the state’s all-time great track stars. At a Region 3-5A meet April 25 at Northside-Columbus, Gleaton set a state record in the 100 meters, becoming the first to run it in under 10 seconds, at 9.98 seconds, passing Our Lady of Mercy’s Christian Coleman, who in 2015 tied Mount Zion-Jonesboro’s D’Angelo Cherry’s 2008 record of 10.16 seconds.

We were already ready to go. It happened so quick.
