A proposal that would allow cannabis sales at adult-only events in Calgary has cleared its first hurdle at city hall, and will now go to city council for final approval. The proposed bylaw change from city administration would allow cannabis store operators to apply for a licence extension to operate a “mobile” business unit at minors-prohibited events. Under the current rules in Calgary, cannabis can be delivered to these events but it cannot be sold by retailers on site.

As part of the agreements to build the new event centre, the Calgary Stampede is set to receive nearly $90 million in land deals from the city. The dollar figure was revealed in a briefing note to city councillors on the Stampede’s finances, as the land exchange agreement signed between the city and Stampede is largely redacted.

An overhead, high voltage transmission line is putting Enmax and a northeast Calgary community at odds, with a petition now circulating against the utility’s proposal. Enmax is proposing a $40 million replacement for a 138 kilovolt (kV) transmission line through the community of Winston Heights-Mountainview, which has been in service since the late 1970s.

Construction on the Calgary event centre project is nine months into a 36-month timeline, project officials said Thursday, as work continues to mitigate any potential impacts from U.S. tariffs. The update came as part of the final meeting of the city’s Event Centre Committee, which was struck in 2022 to revive the project after the project’s previous deal between the city and Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) fell through.

Pathway users along the Bow River and commuters on Memorial Drive will need to find detours over the summer months, as construction continues on the Sunnyside Flood Barrier project. Construction began on the flood barrier last July, which will run 2.4 km along the north side of the Bow River between 14 Street N.W. and Centre Street.
