The Calgary Canucks couldn’t practice at the Ken Bracko Arena at Max Bell Wednesday because crews were putting the finishing touches for the 2025 Centennial Cup, which gets underway in early May. Instead, the walked across the hallway to the adjacent Perry Cavanaugh arena and practiced there. Forward Rhett Melnyk, 20, was his usual smiling self at practice.

The Calgary Canucks proved just how deep they are in the opening round of the playoffs against the Camrose Kodiaks. Their fourth line combined for 23 points as the Canucks defeated the Kodiaks in five games. Leading the way was centre Luc Trevors, who scored five goals and added four assists. Those nine points have him leading in the AJHL playoffs. Trevors, who is from Langdon, says a lot of the credit has to go to his linemates. “We built some chemistry over those five games,” said the 19-year-old.

The Calgary are leaning on their veterans as they prepare to open their first-round playoff series against the Saskatoon Blades on Friday night. For many of the Hitmen, it will be their first taste of the playoffs in two years. That’s where a player like defenceman Kalem Parker can be so valuable at this time of year. Last year, Parker went on a long playoff run with the eventual WHL champions, the Moose Jaw Warriors. Parker says at this time of year, you need to be level-headed.

The Pete Knight Memorial Arena in Crossfield, Alta., opened up in 1977. It has a rich history and has played an important role in keeping the community together. Mayor Kim Harris says it’s “really the community hub for Crossfield.”“This is where everybody gathers and makes friends,” Harris said. “There’s engagement and there’s a social connection.”Being 48 years old, the arena has had its share of wear and tear over the years and could use some tender loving care.
