‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Review

As the MCU is about to close out Phase Five, they have a lot to prove to audiences that they can go out with a bang and set us up for what’s to come with The Avengers, Fantastic 4, and (eventually), the X-Men. Captain America: Brave New World mostly gets the job done, but it feels much more like a “best of” Marvel clip show instead of something fresh in and of itself.

These are the brave men and women who submit themselves to dangers that could (and sometimes do) break their bodies just for our entertainment.

It’s difficult to imagine the film world without Ghostbusters, as it is a true classic that deserves its moniker as a “movie that made us.” But as much as the first one is rightfully revered, the path since then has been a bit bumpy. The sequel was fun in its own right, the reboot with the female cast was vastly underrated, and the requel that was supposed to pass the torch to a new generation was fun, if forgettable.

How is the year almost over? I swear I just sat down to decide what my favorite movies of 2022 were, and I’m suddenly doing it all over again. As fast as 2023 was, though, it has been fantastic for cinema, and it feels like we were treated to an embarrassment of riches with all the world-class films we got. Sure, there were some misfires, but with so many amazing releases, it was quite difficult to whittle it down to only 10.

It’s fitting then, that their newest animated movie is celebrating that century and the timeless tales that make up their DNA.

Much how Twilight led to the rise of vampire and fan fiction movies, so too did The Hunger Games with films about teenagers fighting for survival and against the dystopian establishment. While this tale is nothing new (the original was heavily influenced by Battle Royale), they were enjoyable in their own right and concluded with a satisfying, if depressing, ending.

Martin Scorsese will go down in history as one of the most iconic directors of all time. Aside from Steven Spielberg and Akira Kurosawa, I can’t think of a more influential filmmaker. While the vast majority of his movies focus on the darker aspects of humanity (with the underrated Hugo being a refreshing departure), it cannot be denied that many are masterpieces, depressing though they can be.

There is nothing like a well-done, raunchy comedy. Cringing at characters doing things your mother would never approve of, laughing at jokes you know you shouldn’t, and squirming at gross out moments can be some of the best times to be had at a movie. Which isn’t to say this is something that is always done well. Strays, for example, attempted this, but its premise of anthropomorphic dogs dropping F-bombs fell flat 15 minutes in.
