I typically give my garage a good cleaning every few months. Every time I do, I pick up some of my old antlers, sheds, and dead heads. I’ll reminisce on some of my favorite hunts or make false promises to myself about new spots. Then, I put them back in the corner until the next cleaning, where they go on collecting dust. Prepping for deer season starts long before October. Hanging stands and trimming shooting lanes are important, but that shouldn’t be the only preseason work on your schedule this year. While it might not be as sexy, habitat improvements can provide immediate and long-term benefits for private hunting properties. In fact, I’d bet my favorite hunting rifle that habitat management will increase your odds of success more than buying a new tree stand or bow.
