France’s parliament is under growing scrutiny over its use of taxpayers’ money after two MPs were suspended for misuse of their expenses on purchases including drugs and dating apps. Andy Kerbrat, 34, a member of the radical left France Unbowed party, and Christine Engrand, 70, an MP with the populist right National Rally, were suspended for two weeks and put on half pay for two months. Kerbrat was arrested for buying 3-MMC, an illicit designer drug, at a Paris underground station last year.

President Macron has ignited an inflammatory debate over France’s sacrosanct summer holidays with an announcement that he is planning to reform the school calendar. Macron, who says pupils forget their lessons during the eight-week summer break, is to convene an assembly made up of ordinary citizens to draw up a new calendar for the nation’s schools. But in a country where pupils have 16 weeks away from the classroom every year, his idea has generated widespread opposition.
