The educator unions in Beverly, Gloucester, Marblehead, and Revere all voted overwhelmingly to enter into work-to-rule, starting on Friday, Oct. 4.

Earlier in the evening, the legislative affairs subcommittee voted to recommend the legalization. Cervantes’ three-year appointment to the position will run through September of 2027. “Julia has been an asset to the Veterans’ Service Department since 2022,” said Mayor Patrick Keefe.
Fire Station Site Survey Remains Open to Residents

As of Tuesday, about 370 residents had responded to a survey asking them to choose a preferred site for a new fire station. The survey, which is on the town’s website, provides information on the potential cost and plans for two potential fire station sites, the old middle school on Pauline Street and the town basketball courts on Walden Street. “Right now, it is leaning about 58-42 (percent) with Pauline Street being in the lead at this point,” said Town Manager Tony Marino.
Changes coming to Board of Health meetings

The town’s board of health is making some changes aimed at providing more outreach and education for the town’s residents. Several members of the board appeared before the town council Tuesday night to highlight some of those changes, which will include an earlier start time for meetings, having the meetings televised on WCAT, and bringing in guest speakers to talk about different topics of importance to the board and the town.

October is White Cane Awareness Month in Massachusetts. At Tuesday night’s town council meeting, resident John Morgan spoke about the importance of white cane awareness in the town and beyond, and related some of his experiences. Morgan has been a Winthrop resident for about 50 years, and is one of 130,000 people in the state with some type of vision impairment.
