Tens of thousands of people throughout Colombia joined the political opposition to President Gustavo Petro in protests on Sunday. Local authorities in Bogota that had promoted the “silent march” said that more than 70,000 people took part in the anti-government protest. The march was called by the far-right Democratic Center in response to the attempted assassination of Senator Miguel Uribe on Saturday last week.

Colombia’s prosecution said Thursday that it arrested and indicted second suspect over the attempted assassination of Senator Miguel Uribe of the far-right Democratic Center party. The suspect, Carlos Eduardo Mora, was accused of the preparations of attack on Uribe and providing the 14-year-old sicario with the weapon that critically injured the senator.

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro further escalated tensions with the opposition by signing a decree calling a referendum on his labor reform proposals without Senate approval. The decree that calls for elections on August 7, the first day of the congressional year, to force Congress into approving the labor reform. In a post on social media platform X, the president said that the decree was sent to the Constitutional Court to decide whether or not it is constitutional and thus binding.

Colombia’s opposition parties have refused to take part in the commission that seeks to guarantee free and fair elections after disavowing President Gustavo Petro as electoral guarantor. Instead of participating in the National Commission for the Coordination and Follow-up of Electoral Processes, the opposition politicians met with Inspector General Gregorio Eliach to create the parallel National Commission for Electoral Surveillance and Control.

Colombia’s Inspector General’s Office opened an investigation into the director of the National Protection Unit (UNP) in response to the attempted assassination of Senator Miguel Uribe. According to the Inspector General’s Office, UNP director Augusto Rodriguez’s alleged failures may make him culpable for the assassination attempt that has left the senator in a critical condition since Saturday.
