On April 4, 1997, Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy hit theaters. The script draws from Smith’s real-life romantic relationship with lead actor Joey Lauren Adams, as well as his friend (and later co-producer) Scott Mosier’s “romantic friendship” with Go Fish producer Guinevere Turner. Smith and Mosier met Turner at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. However, over the years, the film was not without controversy for its LGBTQ+ representation.

When Laurel did secure housing, still in the early days of her recovery, she began conducting outreach from her stoop. Savage Sisters Recover Inc. was born. The Kensington-based 501(c)3 nonprofit has two main areas of direct service, shaped by the experience of its founder: harm reduction outreach and recovery housing.

A lifetime of work and personal experience in drug treatment has led Sheila Vakharia to become committed to harm reduction — a framework that offers skills and strategies to those engaging in high-risk activities, including but not limited to drug use, to keep them and their communities safe.
