On Art Week Tokyo 2024Tokyo’s contemporary art scene remains enigmatic, even to frequent visitors from across Asia, who are often confounded by Japan’s linguistic and cultural barriers. To take stock of the past year, Artforum asked an international group of artists to select a single exhibition or event that most memorably caught their attention in 2024. Raven Chacon (Swiss Institute, New York)Raven Chacon’s exhibition and performance “A Worm’s Eye View from a Bird’s Beak” dealt with the immensity of the landscape in which he grew up, the Navajo Nation, as well as others shaped by Indigenous peoples’ encounters with colonialism.

Since February 24, 2022, the world has been paying more attention to Ukrainian history. Will the same be true of its art history? The works selected for “In the Eye of the Storm: Modernism in Ukraine, 1900–1930s,” mostly from Kyiv’s National Art Museum of Ukraine, were urgently transported out of the country when the Russian offensive was intensifying in mid-2022; a traveling exhibition, while functioning as an advocate for the beleaguered nation, was also a way to safeguard them.

An art week in Shanghai and surroundsTHIS YEAR’S ART WEEK, NOW THE CITY’S SOLE period of competitive, multi-venue programming, started off on a surprising note. As I tried to determine my own schedule, I noticed that nearly half of Shanghai’s perennial art venues had delayed releasing their exhibition information until the last minute. Even once the dates were announced, coordinating visits remained a challenge, as exhibitions in the same area didn’t bother to align their openings.
