Shyam Sablani, professor of food engineering, recently received the Yang “Wendy” Liu award for his focus on making international students feel at home at Washington State University. Sablani received the award in May for excellence in teaching international students. Sablani was nominated by his student Smit Patel, student in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at WSU.

PULLMAN, Wash. – A small 3-ounce sensor capable of recording 2,400 data points of movement in just one second being tested and refined by researchers at Washington State University could be key in reducing the number of injuries to racehorses. Led by Dr. Warwick Bayly in WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, researchers used the biometric sensors, developed by the company StrideSAFE, to track thoroughbreds as they raced and trained at some of the top racetracks in the country.

Nearly 150 high school 4-H students continued a historical tradition of growth and learning through career exploration and leadership development during the nearly week-long Washington State 4-H Teen Conference on the Washington State University Pullman campus. Washington State University 4-H has a long tradition of positive impacts to youth development through high-quality, research-based programming delivered by WSU faculty and staff.

Washington State University led the nation in passing in four of football coach Mike Leach’s eight seasons with the Cougars. Fondly remembered as ‘the pirate,’ Leach, whose accolades include the third-most victories in program history, is one of five individuals being inducted into the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame on Sept. 6-7, 2024. He is joined by track & field’s Alissa Brooks-Johnson, soccer’s Micaela Castain, basketball’s Don Collins, and football student-athlete DeWayne Patterson.

PULLMAN, Wash. – While not yet on the market, fully autonomous vehicles are promoted as a way to make road travel dramatically safer, but a recent study found that knowing more about them did not improve people’s perception of their risk. They needed to have more trust in them too. This study adds to the evidence from other research that knowledge alone is not enough to sway people’s attitudes toward complex technology and science, such as gene editing or climate change.
