The 2025 men’s college basketball season has been defined by elite teams, so it is only fitting that the national championship game be played between two 1-seeds. For just the second time in the history of the men’s NCAA Tournament, all four No. 1 seeds have made it to the Final Four. Auburn, Duke, Houston and Florida have been historically dominant all season long, so it isn’t any surprise that they were all capable of making it this far. In fact, the four teams all rank in the top nine in KenPom’s net efficiency metric going back to the 1996-97 season. Still, by pure statistical probability alone, it is unlikely to see all No. 1 seeds make it this far.

The Sweet 16 further confirmed the trend of this men’s NCAA Tournament: The higher seeds are dominating the proceedings. Dramatic, last-second losses by 10-seed Arkansas and 6-seed Ole Miss were the closest we got to having “surprise” entries into the Elite Eight. There has been a lot of talk about this year’s men’s NCAA Tournament being chalky. We are through one round of March Madness, and the competition has given us the wild moments we all expect. From upsets like those pulled off by 12-seeds McNeese State and Colorado State to heart-pounding finishes such as Michigan vs. UC San Diego, the action has been frenetic. That energy will only pick up as the bracket progresses. With eight games each in the next two days, we are guaranteed more fantastic basketball as teams battle to extend their seasons. Who will make it to the Sweet 16?

So cool to see Paige Bueckers get her title after all she has battled through. And to see Geno and UConn return to the mountaintop after about a decade away is wild.
