ST. ALBANS – Dozens of cars lined the left side of Lower Newton Road Wednesday on the way to protest the detainment of Mohsen Mahdawi at Northwest State Correctional Facility. Holding signs saying “Free Mohsen” and Palestinian flags – Mahdawi was born and raised in Palestine – protesters sang for his freedom and chanted “no justice, no peace. No ICE or police.” Organizers asked for those in attendance to be loud enough for Mahdawi to hear from inside the facility.

FAIRFAX – New windows, floors, lights and doors at BFA-Fairfax bring modern improvements to the aging school. Nearly one full year after BFA-Fairfax broke ground on construction, the Messenger took a walk through the partially-completed building to compare the old to the new. The $36 million dollar renovation has made visible progress outside with two new wings added to the elementary and high schools, as well as countless indoor improvements including new classrooms in the basement.

ENOSBURG FALLS – Construction is finally set to start in Enosburg on the Elm Street sidewalk extension. Construction begins this week, village manager John Dasaro said, starting from the end of the village boundaries on Route 105 heading all the way over to the Emergency Management Services building. Originally, the construction on Elm Street was penciled-in for mid-to-late summer, but was moved up to this spring.

FAIRFAX – Interim Town Manager Nick Nadeau is planning to stick around his hometown for at least another three months. The selectboard and Nadeau originally came to an agreement to have him serve as town manager temporarily after Sarah Hadd stepped back from the role in late January. That agreement had Nadeau sticking around until after Town Meeting Day before officially heading back to Maine May 1. But, the Fairfax native dug roots into his hometown again, and is extending his stay to Aug. 1.

SWANTON – Pollution and land stewardship are front of mind for the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi as community discussions continue in April. The Franklin County Natural Resources Conservation District in partnership with the Abenaki are hosting community conversations to create water quality improvement projects and to involve the Abenaki community on activities in the Missisquoi watershed.
