The buzzer sounds as the 2023 NCAA men’s hockey championship heads to overtime tied at 2-2. A shaking 19-year-old sits in silence on the concourse of a sold-out Amalie Arena, a camera in each hand, mesmerized at the photos he just captured. Suddenly, the buzzer marks the end of intermission. He gets up and sprints through the fans, tears running down his face, his media pass swaying side-to-side with his cameras heavy against his chest. There’s just one thing — those aren’t his cameras.

On April 15, 1947, 28-year-old Jackie Robinson suited up for the Brooklyn Dodgers, officially breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier. While Robinson was not the first Black player in baseball history, he remains one of the greatest symbols of Black excellence in the United States for his accomplishments on and off the field. In school, we’re taught that his perseverance integrated baseball and America’s pastime and was used as a bridge toward equality during the Civil Rights Movement.

Quinnipiac University’s Student Programming Board rang in the new year by offering a new event for students on Jan. 25. Students conversed while making constellation jars and galaxy globes. Constellation jars are made by stamping stars into glossy paper that you wrap inside of a glass jar. Then, insert a fake candle, and it looks like stars in the sky. The galaxy globes were the biggest hit. This take on a snow globe needs just baby oil, water and a lot of glitter.

There’s no more universal symbol of support than a hand on a shoulder. On the afternoon of Dec. 2, over 50 players and coaches from the Hamden Youth Hockey Association gathered at center ice, hands on every shoulder and demonstrated how these seemingly small gestures can have the greatest impact. The 60-year-old Louis “Lou” Astorino Ice Arena welcomed a “Shoulder Check” showcase for the local hockey league aiming to educate young athletes on the importance of kindness while competing.
