When Nikki Packer was 41, she took abortion medicine at home in lockdown. While recovering in hospital, she was arrested, accused of having an unlawful abortion and transported to a police cell while still in pain. Under legislation introduced during Covid, abortion pills can be sent by post, but only for those who are up to 10 weeks pregnant. Packer was estimated to be 26 weeks along. If found guilty, she could have faced a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

This Ukraine peace summit has not yet turned into the spectacular win Donald Trump hoped for. While Volodymyr Zelensky has travelled to Turkey, as suggested by Vladimir Putin last week, the Russian leader is nowhere to be seen. This meeting will not, therefore, provide a springboard to a Nobel Peace Prize which Trump so desperately craves, to match Barack Obama.

Years ago a friend of mine working as a teacher in a large, mixed comprehensive drew the short straw and had to take one of the pubescent year groups for their big sex talk. My teacher friend got the girls, and duly stood before them rolling out the reproductive basics and issues like getting pregnant and ruining your life (though again, they don’t call it that these days) and then inviting questions from the floor.
