    The name of one of Mashpee’s schools will soon be changed. The school committee voted this week to change the name of the Quashnet School to Quashnet Intermediate School (QIS). During its meeting on Wednesday, May 7, the Mashpee School Committee resumed deliberations regarding the name change, which originally began in February.

    Next week, the “Stone Crew” will return to Old Town Cemetery in Sandwich to continue a project it began a few weeks ago—cleaning Revolutionary War veterans’ headstones. “The Stone Crew are all members of the Cape Cod & Islands chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR),” the male counterpart to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), said Reverend Bruce Bassett Jr., who runs the Stone Crew.

    The Mashpee Planning Board decided last Wednesday to hand off plans for a specialty retail grocery store, proposed for 9 Shellback Way/647 Falmouth Road, to the Cape Cod Commission for review as a development of regional impact. The applicant is Shellback Development LLC. Plans for the grocery store were originally proposed in 2022, but were eventually withdrawn. Last Wednesday, April 30, the planning board opened a public hearing for the special permit application.

    Saturday is Mashpee's Annual Town Election. Before heading to the polls, community members packed into the Waquoit Meeting Room at Mashpee Town Hall for a candidates forum to hear from the select board hopefuls on this year's ballot.  The League of Women's Voters of Cape Cod hosted the public forum on May 1. Mashpee voters will be tasked with selecting two candidates to fill two open seats on the select board, one for a two-year term, and one for a three-year term.
