    Once considered the ‘correct’ way for ladies to ride a horse, now everyone can ride side saddle and there are are an increasing number of events to take part in, should you wish to compete. While riding side saddle is very different to riding astride — you only have one leg (the left) against your horse’s side for a start — it is a great skill to learn and can have a positive impact on your astride position.

    Would you consider yourself to be a nervous horse rider — or perhaps there is something in particular that triggers an attack of nerves? Falling off goes with the territory when you ride horses, but many riders (of all levels) experience a particularly bad fall or incident at some point and it takes time to recover from it. I know this because it happened to me.

    A foal who was found in her stable with a bloody mouth and her jaw hanging out of place has defied the odds by making a full recovery. The filly, who was born in February, was just five days old when she was discovered with a broken jaw late at night by her owner Amanda Johnson. She took the foal to UC Davis Veterinary Hospital in California, where X-rays showed complete displaced fractures of both of her mandibles (jaw).

    Laura Collett and her two-time Olympic team gold medallist London 52 triumphed in the TopSpec CCI4*-S at Bicton International Horse Trials on Sunday (25 May) and led Britain to victory in the first leg of the 2025 FEI Eventing Nations Cup. Gemma Stevens on Chilli King, who finished 14th, Barnie Brotherton on DHI King Nelson, eighth, and Selina Milnes on Cooley Snapchat, fifth, completed the British quartet (pictured above).

    Politician Christine Grahame raised the important issue of keeping horses and riders safe while hacking on the road in Scottish Parliament this week (Tuesday 20 May). Christine, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale Constituency, asked the First Minister to support the British Horse Society’s Dead Slow campaign, explaining that it urges drivers to take care around horses on the road.
