This story was originally published in May 2023. The wooden railroad ties were covered in moss and fallen leaves, their edges softened by time and the slow work of nature. Lying across the trail at random intervals, they almost blended into the forest floor. But here and there, a metal spike poked from the decaying wood.

My birthday’s coming up in a few days, but lately it feels like I’m aging in the other direction. Sure, I’m acquiring wrinkles and mystery moles just like any other 30-something-year-old. I’ve found a few white hairs snaking from my scalp. Yet I increasingly find myself doing things I used to do as a kid. As I sit down to write this column, for instance, the knees of my jeans are muddy from me crouching beside a streambed this morning to inspect a bright green, six-spotted tiger beetle.

Rain slashed through the cone of light from my headlamp. On a dreary night in April, I was on a mission to find salamanders and frogs. To my surprise, I ran into a bit of a mystery. This story was originally published in May 2023. On the steep eastern side of Mansell Mountain is an impressive talus slope, a jumble of angular granite rocks baking under the sun. Adorned with faint blooms of white and green lichen, the rocks vary greatly in size and shape. Some of the hunks of granite are no larger than a book, while others are true boulders, exceeding the height of the hikers who labor past.

We entered the forest on a soggy trail edged with beds of soft moss, creeping winterberry and bunches of Christmas ferns flattened from months under snow. It was early afternoon on a Monday in April, and my car stood alone in the gravel parking lot for Long Cove Headwaters Preserve in Searsport. Silence wrapped around us. Not a twitter or peep from a bird or bug could be heard. I strained my ears to detect the shush of wind, distant and gentle, moving through the treetops.

"We have too long forgotten the magic powers of nature. The time has come to call on them again. Remember: all the magic of creation exists within a single tiny seed." - Magi Lune in FernGully ... Happy Earth Day! https://t.co/cLh4q03cQC

After writing this story, I may have to join a local rock club. I just love the idea of going outside with a shovel and rock hammer, and finding something sparkly. 💎 #maineoutdoors #maine https://t.co/4CY5pbgvHw
